When we look to our government for change we must really consider what brings about trends and issues that we oppose or stand behind. There may discussion as to whether your vote counts or not, or if politicians are doing a good job, but we are all here shaping the landscape of American society in or own way everyday. In the stances that we take on issues, and if we show tolerance towards a spectrum of opinions, we define the climate of politics and government that is reflected in Washington D.C. by those entrusted in office.
If we always hope for the right people to be put in office to solve our problems, we will be forever disappointed. Elected officials have agendas to fulfill, and constituents to appease. As people in positions of power continue to act with total disregard for basic humanity a sense of duty should arise in us to look at ways that we can make this country better.
Being critical of the stream of information that fills our head on a daily basis is a simple way to call into question the motives behind the actions of our leaders. When we became a nation of consumers is when we handed over any autonomy from tyrannical tendencies to an elite few.
How we spend our money is how we cast our ballot in today's Corporate Nation. It's definitely a tall order for the public to take a stand and stop consuming gluttonously and maybe boycott companies that act against the best interest of our resources from which we sustain this very country and need to take care of for future generations. Energy and environmental issues have been discussed for decades, but the problems have been ignored for so long that we as a nation can't even think straight.
Relying on Congress to enact our wishes, or to wait for a President in Shining Armour to fix our myriad dilemmas will not empower us as a nation. We silly humans are smart enough to come up with solutions and get paid. The "Us vs. Them" paradigm is what stands between a sustainable nation with an honest government and the current quagmire that this country has become to.
